On August 23rd and 24th, 2024, an offline training workshop on SPSS Software was conducted at Maharaja Hall, LT-1 & LT-4 of Santosh Deemed to be University. Organized by the Central Research Facility in collaboration with the Department of Community Medicine, the workshop focused on Biostatistics and Epidemiology in Health Research, providing participants with hands-on experience using the statistical software. The event commenced with an inaugural address by the organizing chairperson, Prof. Dr. Jyoti Batra, Dean of Research, along with Dr. Sivasensan D., Deputy Dean of Research, and Organizing Secretary Mr. Vikash Singh Patel, Assistant Professor and Biostatistician.
A total of 58 participants, including faculty members, PhD scholars, and postgraduate students, registered for the workshop, which awarded 6 credit points from the Uttar Pradesh Medical Council (UPMC). The resource persons included Dr. Rakesh Kumar Saroj from JNU, New Delhi, as well as Prof. Deepika Agarwal and Dr. Anupama Singh from Santosh Deemed to be University.
Day one featured sessions that addressed the importance of research, problem identification, and data collection strategies. Dr. Rakesh Kumar Saroj led the first session, explaining the significance of framing research questions and objectives. Following this, Prof. Deepika Agarwal emphasized the importance of study design in research, while Dr. Anupama Singh discussed sampling techniques and sample size determination.
On the second day, Dr. Rakesh Kumar Saroj conducted all sessions, focusing on the basic functionalities of SPSS. He taught participants how to enter data, use recode and compute commands, summarize data, assess normality, create graphs, and perform statistical tests such as independent and paired t-tests, as well as correlation analyses. The interactive nature of the workshop encouraged active participation from all attendees, making it a highly engaging experience.
The workshop concluded with a feedback session followed by a valedictory function, where Prof. Jyoti Batra addressed the participants. Resource persons, the organizing team, and participants were recognized for their contributions, and Prof. Batra concluded the event with a vote of thanks, highlighting the success and impact of the workshop on the attendees’ understanding of SPSS and its application in health research.
