Overview

The Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology is a speciality that aims to investigate the cause, nature, diagnosis and treatment of a wide range of abnormalities affecting the oral and maxillofacial region and also provides a centre for teaching scholarly activities. 

Established in 1995, with the objective of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and primarily the diagnosis of specimens received from clinics & hospitals as part of the treatment. 

The three-year postgraduate course in this speciality commenced in 2013 offering three seats per year making the students proficient in histopathological and cytological procedures. Till date about 21 students have completed their post-graduation from our department with many advancing to further studies, showcasing our commitment to academic excellence and professional development.  

Our department is renowned for its strong student engagement, fostering a supportive learning environment that encourages collaboration and innovation. We prioritize cutting-edge teaching methods, integrating hands-on experiences with a solid theoretical foundation to provide a comprehensive education.  

Our student and faculty exchange programs further enhance the academic experience by offering diverse perspectives from across the field.

Prof. (Dr.) Manish Bhargava is a distinguished academician, oral pathologist, educator, researcher and administrator with more than two decades of experience in dental education, clinical practice, research and institutional leadership. He currently serves as Professor & Head, Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology, Oral Microbiology and Forensic Odontology, where he is committed to advancing excellence in teaching, research, and patient care.

Dr. Bhargava has dedicated his career to oral cancer and precancer research, oral diagnosis, forensic odontology and contemporary dental education. His expertise spans oral pathology, dental anatomy, oral histology and oral embryology, with a strong focus on integrating academic excellence with clinical relevance. Throughout his career, he has mentored numerous undergraduate and postgraduate students, fostering a culture of scientific inquiry, critical thinking, and professional growth.

Dr. Bhargava has an impressive academic portfolio comprising 38+ scientific publications, numerous conference presentations, and collaborative research projects that have contributed significantly to the advancement of oral pathology and forensic dentistry. Oral potentially malignant disorders, clinical oral pathology, oral cancer, forensic odontology, and cutting-edge dental education teaching techniques are among his research interests.

Dr. Bhargava has received numerous professional recognitions, including the Dr. R.V. Mehta Best Paper Award, Excellence in Academics Award, and the prestigious Karmsu Kaushlam Award for outstanding accomplishments and meritorious service. He has presided over multiple national conferences of the Indo Pacific Association of Forensic Odontology and the Indian Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathologists. He has also served as an Executive Committee Member of professional organizations, reflecting his continued contribution to academic governance and professional development.

A life member of multiple national professional organizations and a recipient of fellowships in dental lasers and the Pierre Fauchard Academy, Dr. Bhargava remains dedicated to promoting academic excellence, evidence-based practice, ethical leadership, and innovation in oral healthcare education.

Oral Cancer and Potentially Malignant Disorders

  • Early detection and diagnosis of oral cancer and oral potentially malignant disorders.
  • Identification of biomarkers for risk assessment and prognostication.

Advanced Diagnostic Oral Pathology

  • Histopathological diagnosis of oral and maxillofacial diseases.

Academic Training

Undergraduate Training (BDS)

The department is actively involved in the training of undergraduate students during the first three years of the BDS curriculum. Students receive comprehensive instruction in:

  • World Cancer Day celebrated on 4th February to raise awareness about cancers and its consequences and to encourage its prevention among general populations. 
  • National Oral Pathologist Day celebrated on 25th February to commemorates the birth anniversary of Dr H.M Dholakia sir, the first Oral Pathologist in India and aims to highlights the role of oral pathologist in final diagnosis and patient care. 
  • World No Tobacco Day celebrated on 31st May to raise global awareness about the dangers of tobacco use and its devastating health, social and economic impacts on individuals. Students are encouraging to stay away from the tobacco usage.
