Value added course on ECG performing skill and interpretation

Department of Medicine, Santosh Medical College & Hospital conducted value added course on “ECG performing skill and interpretation”. Total 15 Students were enrolled for the 4 day course. The course was conducted as per the guidelines mentioned. Over the period of four days basics of ECG, ECG Performing skills, Hands-on on the ECG machine and Basic interpretation was conducted by Esteemed faculties of the Department. The Program was conducted from 28th July to 31st July in the evening in the Department of Medicine Seminar hall. The day wise activities were done as follows.

Day-1

Dr. Ashok Kumar, Professor & Head, Course Director has taken the First Day Sessions. A pre-test of 20 MCS related to ECG was given to see the baseline knowledge of the candidates. The course was started with detail explanation of the anatomy and physiology of heart followed by the electrophysiology of heart. ECG machine was shown and detail demonstration of various settings was shown including all the different types of ECG machines. The lead placement and various clinical errors done and how to place lead correctly was also shown in detail. Demonstration of how to perform ECG on a subject has been shown and the concept was thoroughly explained with crisp words.

Day 2

Dr. Ashok Kumar, Professor & Head, Course Director has taken the Second Day Sessions has taken lecture on how to interpret ECG in Point wise manner, calculation of rate for regular and irregular heartbeat, regular and irregular rhythm, normal, left, right and extreme axis and how to look for misplaced lead placement. The practical implication of ECG, where to be used and when to repeat again has been explained in great details. The candidates took great interest and interact with course director for their doubts

Day-3

Dr. Shivani Bansal Professor, Department of Medicine, conducted day 3 sessions along with revision of the previous sessions and explained about various intervals and segment which are seen in ECG and their significance including heart blocks at various level and clinical significance was taught. Later the lecture was followed various abnormalities seen in these segments and a detail conceptual idea was provided on STEMI and NSTEMI in detail with management. The lecture was good and is very useful and all the doubts have been cleared.

Day-4

Dr. Ranjum Chaudhary, Assistant Professor, Medicine Department has taken lecture on different types of arrhythmias and how to interpret them and medical management was taught along with common clinical errors while doing ECG and how to identify them. Followed by interpretation of different types of ECG containing various abnormalities has been shown to us and detail explanation has been given. The course has been concluded with Post-test assessment was done to assess the overall understanding after the lecture. In the Post test Assessment all the candidates took part and got qualifies with more than 50 % marks. The result was sent to Registrar for generation of Certificate of the course and Students were felicitated with certificate By Dr. Alka Aggarwal, Dean Medical, Santosh Deemed to Be University, in the Department of General Medicine.
