The Department of General Surgery has been established since 1995 and has been offering postgraduate seats since 2006. It is the largest department of the university, featuring 23 faculty members with an average of 11 years of teaching experience and 30 postgraduate students. In 2020, the number of postgraduate seats increased from 6 to 10. The department actively participates in curriculum enrichment, offering IPC training and conducting sessions on yoga, hand washing, road safety, and patient safety.
Faculty and postgraduate students engage in national conferences and have received awards at both national and international levels, with notable achievements in research and ISR awards. The faculty is recognized at the national level, with members holding 19 fellowships. Students, both undergraduate and postgraduate, benefit from value-added courses and training in the skills lab.
The department's infrastructure includes a modular operating theater equipped with the latest laparoscopic technology and a harmonic scalpel. It also conducts six specialty clinics: Urology, Neurosurgery, Plastics, Breast, Paediatric Surgery, and Colorectal, with ongoing upgrades to surgical techniques. Workshops are organized in collaboration with industry partners, alongside internal workshops such as safe surgery workshops and wet lab workshops.
The department has played a vital role in organizing major university events, including NHSC, SANCON, and Foundation Day, for the past five years, with one faculty member even serving as a TEDx speaker. Additionally, the first patent of the university, the Suture Board, was granted to the department and the department also holds two copyrights, 72 publications, and 17 MoUs. The department is actively involved in grants, seed money, and consultancy projects. Notably, two faculty members occupy top administrative positions, namely Dean Academics and Vice-Chancellor/MS. As of 2024, the total number of postgraduate students in the department stands at 96.
