Goals

  • To focus on making students understand the basic concepts in physiology which helps the students to understand medicine better.
  •  To inculcate the spirit of research in undergraduate students, postgraduate students and research scholars.
  •  Integrative Interactive Teaching.
  •  A comprehensive knowledge of physiology with its research, clinical correlations and applications.

Thrust Areas

The main thrust areas for research in the department are:

1.Medical education technology

2.Case and control studies

3. Pilot studies to understand the normal responses of human body and its functional mechanisms

4. In collaboration with other medicine branches to understand the functioning , the defect and its potential resolution

Facilities

Clinical Focus:

The department has clinical focus in its teaching with integration with both preclinical departments ( horizontal integration) and clinical departments (vertical integration) to make the teaching relatable to clinical scenarios. Undergraduate students are also encouraged to undertake research projects related to clinical topics to sensitise them to clinical aspects of medicine. The basics of history taking, General physical examination and Specific systemic examination are also taught to the undergraduates which help them to form a solid base for medicine later. Familiarization with medical equipments like Sphygmomanometer, Stethoscope, Reflex hammer, Spirometer, ECG machine and Exercise stress testing is done in the department by exposing them in the first year itself. Hematological techniques are also taught which help them later in their clinical acumen.

Research Contributions

Laboratory facilities:

Following laboratories are operating in the department.

  1. Human/Clinical Physiology Laboratory: experiments like Blood Pressure measurement, examination of various body systems, exercise and spirometry to name a few are done.
  2. Haematology Laboratory: experiments like Red Blood cell count, White blood cell count, Differential leucocyte count and Haemoglobin estimation to name a few are done.
  3. Postgraduate research laboratory: Advanced tests like Electrocardiogram, Basal Metabolic Rate to name a few are done.
  4. Mammalian/Amphibian/Simulation Laboratory: Experiments on Frog nerve –muscle preparation and Mammalian heart facilities are present and amphibian and mammalian physiology is taught to the students using simulation software’s.
