Overview

 

Established in 1996, the Department of General Medicine has become a cornerstone of medical education, offering 11 MD seats and accommodating 150 MBBS students and 25 BSc Clinical Nutrition & Dietetics students. Our department stands out due to its significant clinical load, which enhances both undergraduate and postgraduate learning experiences.
We have established valuable collaborations through MOUs with organizations such as the Delhi Diabetic Forum and IMA, facilitating various academic activities that enrich teaching and research. Our multidisciplinary faculty includes specialists in cardiology and neurology, providing students with exposure to super-specialty training.
The department runs six specialty clinics, delivering holistic and affordable patient care through interdepartmental cooperation. Our experienced faculty actively engage in clinical research and trials, having secured numerous extramural grants. Additionally, we prioritize community health through extension and outreach activities, focusing on the prevention and awareness of non-communicable diseases like diabetes and hypertension. To date, the department has successfully trained 24 MD students and 65 BSc CND students, reinforcing its commitment to high-quality medical education.

Course Outcomes

 

CO 1: Develop clinical skills (history taking, clinical examination and other instruments of examination) to diagnose various common medical disorders and emergencies

CO 2: Perform simple routine investigations like haemogram, stool, urine , sputum and biological fluid examination

CO 3: Explain and correlate signs and symptoms, appropriately order and interpret laboratory tests and summarize management of various diseases including which are of local, Regional &National Relevance

ACADEMICS

 

  • The Department is involved in the teaching of undergraduate students (MBBS, BDS, physiotherapy and BSc nursing), and post graduates. Currently 4 postgraduates in M.D medicine are enrolled every year for training.
  • It includes training in primary patient care and is the foundation for vital super specialties such as Cardiology, Neurology, Nephrology, etc.
  • This department provides the much sought after outpatient and inpatient services apart from providing comprehensive support to the intensive care units.
  • The department focuses on the method of micro-teaching, where one faculty member is allotted to a small batch of students. This allows for greater student-teacher interaction and provides an edge in learning.
  • Students get to learn about the nervous, cardiovascular, endocrinal, respiratory and musculoskeletal systems in the body.
  • For PG residents, problem-based learning approaches form the backbone of their training. They also participate in interesting investigations and attend various subject-specific activities on all days of the week.
  • The Department conducts various activities from time to time. These include CMEs, workshops, and guest lectures. Our staff regularly presents papers in various state and national level conferences.
